The main difference is that “can” is used to describe an ability or permission. It can also refer to a general truth, such as something that has a strong sense of possibility. For example, if you’re facing a lion and you think about what could happen, it can kill you. That’s a strong sense of possibility because lions are much bigger than humans, and the physical differences are significant.
On the other hand, “could” is used to describe something with a weaker possibility. For instance, a car that isn’t regularly maintained could last several decades. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the car will last that long—it’s just a weak possibility. But both “can” and “could” indicate some level of possibility.
